More (great) SOMA News!

Hello SOMA team,
I have several really great news items to pass along…

SOMA SWIMMER WILLARD LAMB TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE INTERNATIONAL MASTERS SWIMMING HALL OF FAME

I received a call yesterday letting me know that Willard “Wink” Lamb will be inducted into the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame (IMSHOF) this year!!!  This is an immense honor.

I have been going back and forth with IMSHOF trying to get a waiver of one of the requirements for induction which states that all nominees shall have participated in the sport for a minimum of 15 years and covering at least four different age groups.  Willard has only been swimming 13 years, but they agreed to grant the exception given his stellar resume and advanced age!

The induction ceremony will be at the USAS Convention in St. Louis in September.  I called Wink yesterday to give him the news and then booked him a flight and room.  He and Doug, his son, are rightfully very excited about the news and upcoming trip!

CONGRATULATIONS TO JON NELSON

The same weekend that several of us were at Foster Lake for the cable swims, Superior SOMA swimmer Jon Nelson took 2nd overall in the Olympic Distance triathlon event at Pacific Crest Sports Festival, posting the fastest bike split of the day.  At 53 years of age, Jon tangled with the younger bucks and nearly came out on top overall!  Full results are here:

A couple of photos of Jon’s finish and on the podium are attached.  Amazing work Jon!

RECORDS FALL TO SOMA SWIMMERS AT PNA LCM MEET

On Saturday, July 6th, our friends to the north hosted a meet offering the rare chance to swim LCM in the amazing Federal Way pool.  Four SOMA swimmers (Wes Edwards, Rick Howell, Dan Kirkland, and Matt Miller) were in attendance with 25 total Oregon swimmers and 127 total swimmers at the meet.  We all swam quite well, with 3 records falling to SOMA swimmers.  Wes Edwards set the Oregon and NW Zone record in the 100 LCM back (1:17.05) for men 65-69, and Dan Kirkland set the Oregon record in the 200 back (2:49.31) for men 70-74.  Congratulations and great job you two!
